Company History

Schwietert’s Cones & Candy is certainly the candy store with the experience! From fudge and ice cream to cotton candy and coffee, our customers get to have an experience that we feel they will likely not have anywhere else. This experience, developed through the years, certainly hasn’t come without a rich history.

Our history begins in the small coastal town of Cannon Beach, Oregon. Long time forestry engineer of 25 years, Wayne Schwietert, and his wife, Barbara, were uncertain what direction to take after Wayne had been forced into early retirement, because of the closure of Crown Zellerbach. With the agreement of his wife, Wayne and her decided to take the first of many risks and make a career change. They decided to go into business for themselves. At the time, their daughter had been working for a candy store in town, called Warners Candy Store. When it went up for sale, Wayne and Barbara approached a local bank, and the bank generously gave them a loan on their home. They used the loan to purchase the candy business for $60,000. They opened their first ice cream and candy store for business on September 1, 1985.

While the business has been successful, and certainly fun, the journey from those first days until today was less than easy. The Schwietert family worked hard, long hours, sometimes laboring day and night to develop their business.

Wayne and Barbara recruited their children to help with the family business and together, they all succeeded where many others would have failed, and some did. Through multiple remodels, purchases of more locations and a major move of the primary Cannon Beach store, the Schwietert family business continued to grow.

Jeff Schwietert, Wayne and Barbara’s youngest, followed in his parents footsteps by taking a major risk and left college to run the family business. In 2004, Jeff was given partial ownership, and his ownership slowly grew over the years until 2012 where he gained complete ownership. While Wayne and Barbara are still involved today, Jeff has taken full control of the ship and is swiftly moving the business forward.

Since Jeff obtained ownership, his larger than life vision for the future of the candy and ice cream store has been what moved the company into the direction of franchising. Jeff had always thought the family concept could be easily replicated and his dream had begun to become true.

Schwieterts-Cones-and-CandyJeff changed the name of the company to Schwietert’s Cones & Candy, partnered with Francorp out of Chicago to help franchise the business, and began to draw up a plan to expand nationwide. Jeff’s vision of franchising his family concept had come to fruition.

Schwietert’s Cones & Candy is not simply about the candy, the ice cream, the fudge, and all the other wonderful things we carry. It is about the rich history, it is about hard work, it is about our customers, it is about the experience. When you step into one of our locations, we desire you to remember what it was like to be a kid again. To forget your worries and troubles, and to, for even just a few moments, remember what it is like to simply have fun.

We not only welcome you into our store, but we welcome you into our family.
